Title: Efficacy of Bamboo [Melocanna baccifera (Roxburgh) Kurz, 1875] Extract in Labeo Rohita (Hamilton, 1822) Fingerlings against Fungal Infection under Low pH Stress
Objectives:
- to perform in vitro evaluation of the properties of bamboo (Melocanna baccifera) extract;
- to evaluate the toxicity of most efficient extract in Labeo rohita fingerlings;
- to evaluate the pathophysiological responses of L. rohita fingerlings fed with bamboo (M. baccifera) extract; and
- to evaluate the response of bamboo (M. baccifera) extract fed L. rohita fingerlings challenged with fungal infection under low pH stress
The work involves preparation of extracts (aqueous and alcoholic), phytochemical profiling, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties through in vitro tests. Toxicity study was carried through feed on L. rohita fingerlings using BLAL extract. Haemato-immuno-biochemical parameters of L. rohita fingerlings were also observed for 60 days when administered through BLAL extract based feed. Regular sampling was done at 7th, 15th, 30th and 60th day of feeding. Different haematological parameters like RBC, WBC, PCV, Hb, MCV, MCH, MCHC; biochemical parameters like blood glucose, ALP, GPT, GOT, plasma Na+, K+, Fe2+ Ca+, Mg+ and immunological parameters like lysozyme activity, NBT, anti-protease activity, myeloperoxidase activity plasma protein, immunoglobulin, albumin, albumin: globulin and immunegene (HSP70, IL-1𝛽, TNF-𝛼) expression were studied. Challenge study was also carried where fish were exposed to multiple stressors like low pH stress, Saprolegnia parastica infection, S. parastica infection under low pH and Aeromonas hydrophila infection after feeding with BLAL extract based feed for 7 days.
