ABSTRACT
This study analyses the impact of government agricultural expenditure on agricultural production output in Nigeria from (1981-2018).Time series data was used and sourced from World Bank and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Statistical Bulletin annual reports. The variables used in the model were agricultural production output as the dependent variable, total government expenditure on agriculture, gross capital formation, domestic savings, credit from commercial bank to agricultural sector, and labour force participation as independent variables. The study adopted various processes of the popular bound testing approach to co-integration (Auto Regressive Distributed Lagged model), and the findings suggest that there is long run relationship among agricultural production output, total government expenditure on agriculture, gross capital formation, domestic savings, credit from commercial bank to agricultural sector, and labour force participation. Also, findings reveals that total government expenditure on agriculture, gross capital formation, domestic savings, credit from commercial bank to agricultural sector, and labour force participation had no significant impact on agricultural production output in the short-run, while in the long-run, all the independent variables except for domestic savings had significant positive impact on agricultural production output. Based on the findings, the study suggests that government agricultural expenditure significantly promotes agricultural production output in Nigeria. Therefore, policy makers and regulatory authorities should create an enabling environment geared towards mobilizing domestic savings from small scale famers, encourage and strengthen credit schemes to famers, encourage labour force participation rate in the sector in order to enhance agricultural output and productivity in Nigeria.
